Sukamade Beach - Merubetiri National Park
Pantai Sukamade menjadi persinggahan bagi empat dari 7 jenis penyu laut di dunia. Penyu hijau (Chelonia mydas), penyu sisik (Eretmochelys imbricata), penyu slengkrah (Lepidochelsy Olivacea), dan penyu belimbing (Dermochelys coriacea) mendatangi pesisir Meru Betiri untuk bertelur. Ancaman terhadap telur penyu sangat banyak, sehingga demi keselamatan generasi baru reptil purba, telur-telur tersebut akan direlokasi ke tempat penetasan semi alami (hatchery).
Metode penetasan semi alami dilakukan dengan perlakuan dan kondisi (kedalaman sarang dan posisi telur) yang sama saat telur berada di habitat aslinya. Tingkat keberhasilan metode ini mencapai 80% dengan masa penetasan antara 55 hingga 60 hari. Pertumbuhan embrio sangat dipengaruhi oleh suhu. Embrio akan tumbuh optimal pada kisaran suhu antara 22 – 24 C dan akan mati jika di luar kisaran suhu tersebut. Kondisi lingkungan yang sangat mempengaruhi pertumbuhan embrio hingga menetas antara lain: suhu pasir, kadar air dalam pasir, dan kadar oksigen.
